“Let The Fools Debate The Details.”

Travis and I were just talking about this the other day. It actually started with the John Gray and Trump “situation” which I won’t get into here because I have had several experiences of my own to share.

One being, I’ve had many dining out experiences with lots of folks. No one batted an eyelash when I ordered my food unless I ordered something “unusual”. An unsweet tea in a crowd of cokes. A salad instead of a pasta dish. And, que the influx of questions and opinions, “Are you on a diet? Atkins is unhealthy. I hate the treadmill. I lost 40 lbs. running outdoors. White rice actually has fewer calories than brown rice.”

Whoa.

Can we go back to the fun convo we’d be having if I had ordered a margarita on the rocks and a supreme burrito with extra queso?

For whatever reason, we watch people do the same things over and over again and when they decide to get up from where they are and walk forward we bombard them with questions that the forward movement was going to answer anyway.

Our questions and doubt, while sometimes well-meaning, dig ditches for our friends to fall in and become stuck debating this way or that way instead of taking action on what they know right now. Instead of doing something.

On page 3 of Ramit Sethi’s book I Will Teach You To Be Rich, he asks, “Imagine the last time you and your friend talked about finances or fitness. Did you go for a run afterward? Did you send money to your savings account? Of course not. People love to argue minor points, partially because they feel it absolves them from actually having to do anything. Let the fools debate the details.”

We spend way too much time talking instead of doing. And, when someone decides they’re not standing by and watching anymore, we demotivate them with all of our what-if’s.

Let’s not get bogged down in the details. Keep your eyes and ears open for God. Be willing to turn back if the Holy Spirit nudges you in a different way. But, don’t stop running your race to stop and debate with someone who’d rather talk than walk…someone who’s so afraid of making a mistake, they make nothing of their lives…of themselves. God gives us light for our path. It’s up to us to walk it.
